's beating president obama by four points in the pugh research poll this morning. tom fitzgerald has been looking at the poll. some of the folks who put it together. how much are those new poll results affected by last week's debate? >> reporter: you can't underestimate it, will. we spoke with the directorate the pugh research center and he said clearly the impact of last week's debate is having a big impact on the poll numbers and romney's new lead over the president. the new poll out shows the thapresident obama is trailing mitt romney 49-45% and that is romney's first big lead and the margin of error was covered by this and since he won the republican nomination in august and as recently as last month. romney was trailing the president. and romney is looking ahead and looking to build on the lead. the associate director of the p gushing h research center told us the result shows the president is slipping with key groups since last week's debate while romney is making strong gains, especially among women, latino, and independent voters. >> the trajectory of the race appears to have chan
